African Drumming Classes

WE ARE THE DRUM with Quint Lange in Wyndmoor, PA 19038

WE ARE THE DRUM is a hand drumming workshop taught on the West African djembe, (and jun-jun/bell for those interested) for beginning to "advancing" players, starting with the basics as given by Babatunde Olatunji and moving into West African and Afro Caribbean rhythms with the emphasis on pulse, flow and developing the awareness that as drummers, and musicians in general,

We walk a fine line between playing and being played by the music. Making music together involves a collective awareness, a communal agreement as to how we relate to and use the flow of time, choosing moments of sound and silence to create rhythm. Our goal as a drum ensemble is to become one drummer with as many hands as are playing. Drumming, dancing and singing have the power to elate, to heal, and to heighten one's spiritual and physical well being. Music is a gift we are all blessed with to one extent or another and the way to honor that gift is to use it and to share it, through teaching, performing, or simply sending a joyful noise into the universe around us.

Can children attend?
Most of the folks who take these classes are adults.  However, from time to time, there are requests from parents regarding their children who may be interested.  On the occasions that this has happened, we have had varying degrees of success of that child hanging in there. (so to speak)  if this situation speaks to a need of yours, we will first need to discuss over the phone.  On all of these prior occasions the parent either took the class as well or was present in the class to make sure everything was okay.  If and when that was established, sometimes the child was dropped off and picked up afterwards.  We've had ages 9 -16 over the years.

What is the cost?
A series is typically 6 classes and costs $96

Will drums be provided?
Yes. Drums (djembes) are on hand for class use as well as for purchase.

Where is the class held?

About Quint

Quint Lange has had the pleasure and privilege to play drums for dancers for nearly thirty five years.

Quint has traveled the world performing and teaching all the way from the Caribbean Islands to Bar Harbor Maine. He has taught at the Institut du Développement de la Personne in Québec, and along side the legendary drummer, Babatunde Olatunji at the Omega Institute in New York.

Quint's philosophy is that music is a gift that we are all blessed. The way to honor that gift is to use it and to share it, through teaching, performing, or simply sending a joyful noise into the universe around us.
